Wajir: Technical Assistance for Improvement of Fecal Sludge Management
Partners: Wajir Water and Sewerage Company, as part of World Bank’s Water and Sanitation Development Project (P156634)
Timeframe: July 2020 - Ongoing
Wajir, a town of 90,000 residents in semi-arid northwestern Kenya, has been dependent on a government-run bucket toilet system since before independence. As the area has rapidly urbanized, cases of water-borne diseases like cholera have been on the rise. Sanivation has been contracted by the water utility, Wajir Water and Sewerage Company, to revamp the municipal sanitation system using city-wide inclusive sanitation (CWIS) principles. In partnership with the utility, we will improve health and safety protocols, build the capacity of the utility, and professionalize the sanitation system which does not rely on water (a benefit in an area prone to droughts). This work will not only improves safely managed sanitation in Wajir but will also provide an example of how we can replicate our model in partnership with local governments and financiers like the World Bank.
