Kakuma: Container-based toilets to briquettes model

Partners: United Nations High Commission for Refugees, Norwegian Refugee Council, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

Timeline: October 2016 - October 2019

From 2016-2019, Sanivation partnered with UNHCR and NRC to deliver container-based sanitation and cost-effective waste treatment. The system was run and managed by local refugees. We deployed 500 toilets, sold nearly 100 tons of fuel, and hired 30 refugees to run the system. We completed the project in Kakuma and published two reports in partnership with UNHCR on the cost-effectiveness of the model. We have continued to provide consulting services to the main hospital in Kakuma Refugee Camp. Our ongoing work in Kakuma demonstrates that not only can we continue to deliver on contracts for partners but that we are also building our credibility as sanitation project developers.
